The news had struck him like a stray bullet when it came, just after the sun had begun to set and work was done for the day. He'd always thought himself able to contain his feelings, but he'd had to rush from the base and his fellow mercs as fast as possible without drawing attention.
Once outside, he fell to his knees in the dust and grass by the wooden railing, his slouch hat falling from his brow and settling into the dirty, his rifle holster and sniper rifle tumbling off his shoulder along with it. His fingers dug into the dirt, his eyes wide and empty and mouth twisted down in a look of disbelief.
They were all that he'd had and they were gone now and he felt like nothing mattered anymore. Felt like all he wanted to do was give up.
Another 100 Theme Challenge picture with a little story to go with it. I'm sure most of you out there familiar with the character know who "they" are. I honestly don't know if Sniper'd react like this to something like that, but I do know that kind of thing, really, really, really hurts and can make you feel like the world just isn't worth it anymore.
